Client Testimonial: Effluent Solutions Australia

Hugh Bowman Review

I am proud to share this testimonial from Luke and Mikayla at Effluent Solutions Australia. They have been working with me for the past two years, and in that time they have made huge progress in their business, their systems, and their roles as business owners.

When they first came to coaching, they were run off their feet. They were struggling to keep up with demand, dealing with cash flow challenges, and unsure about the next steps to take to grow their business. Like many engineers, they were working hard but did not have the structure they needed to move forward with confidence.

Since working together, Luke and Mikayla have implemented strong systems, created more structure, and developed clear roles within the business. They now set regular goals, stay accountable, and have a much smoother and more organised operation. One of their biggest wins came from a recruitment strategy I recommended, which helped them find a staff member who fits their culture and supports their growth.

What I admire most about Luke and Mikayla is their willingness to learn, take action, and apply the strategies we work through. They want a business that supports the life they are building, and they have been committed to making that happen.

If you are a tradie business owner and you want clarity, structure, and a plan that actually works, reach out. I would be glad to help you build the business you want.

Doers Versus Completers

In this video, I talk about the difference between “doers” and “completers” and why this really comes down to creating a sense of urgency in your team. Doers are often busy with tasks, but without much focus on getting things finished. Completers, on the other hand, are the people who push through, finish the job, and get that sense of achievement that comes with completion.

As business owners, we want more completers. The best way to encourage this is by using what I call “time talk.” It’s about framing every meeting, every discussion, and every instruction with a time frame. For example, “Will you have that finished by the end of today?” or “Can we complete this by the end of the week?” By consistently talking about time and completion, you pass on your sense of urgency to your team.

This can be a great discussion point in team meetings and a tool to boost productivity across your business. If you’d like help building urgency and accountability into your workplace, reach out, I’d be glad to help.

How to Qualify Customers

In this video, I talk about how to qualify customers properly and why it can save you a huge amount of time and frustration. I share a real example where one of my clients wasted half a day on a prospect who was nowhere near ready to buy, and how better qualifying could have prevented that.

The key is to ask better questions. I explain how to:

  • Uncover the customer’s real problem
  • Understand the impact it is having
  • Clarify their time frame
  • Find out if they have a budget in mind

These questions quickly reveal the quality of the lead and how serious they are about moving forward.

I also share some practical ways to raise the quality of your leads: using questionnaires to gather more detail, inviting prospects to your office or showroom so they buy into the process, and even offering paid site visits that show commitment and deliver value.

By combining great questions with strategies that encourage buy-in, you can focus your time and energy on customers who are genuinely ready to do business.

If you’d like help designing your own qualification process or building tools like questionnaires and site visit offers, reach out, I’d be glad to help.

The Real Value of Capability Statements

In this video, I talk about capability statements – what they are, how to use them effectively, and the one thing you should never do with them.

A capability statement is more than just a glossy brochure; when used properly, it’s a powerful tool to attract the clients you actually want to work with – the ones who are profitable and can provide repeat business.

I share my best advice on how to present a capability statement face-to-face, how to highlight the right services for each client, and why showing genuine passion and enthusiasm makes all the difference. Most importantly, I explain why emailing your capability statement is one of the quickest ways to lose its value.

If you’d like help creating or using a capability statement to win the right customers for your business, get in touch, I’d be glad to help.

Thanks
Hugh

How to Prioritise your Time

How tradies should prioritise time

Are you working too much, constantly on call for your customers, and left with no time or energy for yourself of your family?

You’re not alone! And it’s a problem I see all the time. The truth is, unless you take control of your priorities, the consequences can be serious: burnout, broken relationships, or complete exhaustion.

When you’re in that state, EVERYONE LOSES including your customers, you team and your business.

Let’s shift that.

A Simple Framework to Help You Focus on What Matters

To get your time and energy going to the right places, I want to share a simple yet powerful framework. It’s all about putting your effort where it truly counts, and in the right order.

Here’s how it works:

  1. YOU

Yes, we start with you. And no, it’s not selfish. If you’re unwell, burnt out, or mentally drained, you’re not going to be much help to your business, your team, or your family.

Prioritising your own mental state and wellbeing is not optional, it’s essential! You sit at the very top of the tree. If you’re not functioning well, everything else underneath will suffer.

  1. FAMILY

This is probably the reason you’re in business to begin with. It’s what drives and sustains you.

But too often, I see people putting their business above their family, and that’s when things fall apart. Your family needs your presence, not just your income.

  1. YOUR BUSINESS

Yes, your business is important, but it’s there to serve you and your family, not the other way around. Keep it in perspective.

When the business becomes the top priority and everything else is sacrificed for it, that’s when resentment, stress, and imbalance start to creep in.

  1. TEAM

Some business owners bend over backwards for individual team members, even at their own expense. While your team is valuable, your business can’t revolve around one person.

Don’t let the fear of losing a staff member take priority over your own wellbeing or the bigger picture.

  1. CUSTOMERS

This might surprise you, but customers come last in this hierarchy, and that’s not a bad thing.

Some people do absolutely everything for their customers, sacrificing themselves, their family, their team… everything. But that’s completely upside down.

Customers are important, but not more important than your health, your family, your business, or your team.

Final Thoughts

So, the next time you feel pulled in a million directions, ask yourself: Where is my time and energy actually going?

If you apply this framework:

  1. You
  2. Family
  3. Business
  4. Team
  5. Customers

You’ll start making clearer, healthier decisions about how to spend your time.

When your priorities are in order, everything else starts to flow. Hope this helps.
